The World-Soul
The cosmos imagined as a single living creature, animated through and through by a soul that gives it life, motion, and order.
The World-Soul (psyche tou kosmou) is the principle that makes the universe a living, intelligent organism. Plato introduced it in the Timaeus (4th c. BCE), where the Demiurge fashions a soul — blended from sameness and difference — and weaves it through the whole cosmos. The Stoics recast it as the immanent divine reason pervading matter, and the Neoplatonists, especially Plotinus (3rd c. CE), made the World-Soul a central level of reality — an influence that later reached Renaissance and Romantic thought.
