Non-Contradiction
The same thing cannot both be and not be, in the same respect, at the same time.
The principle of non-contradiction states that a proposition and its negation cannot both be true at once in the same respect. Aristotle (4th c. BCE) gave it its classic defense in Metaphysics Book IV, calling it the firmest of all principles — one that cannot be proved, yet cannot be coherently denied. It has anchored logic ever since, with roots reaching back to Parmenides' insistence that what-is cannot not-be.
